The Lower Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia is one of the last places on Earth where dozens of distinct ethnic groups continue to live largely according to ancient traditions — maintaining languages, rituals, dress, and social structures that have existed for thousands of years. In a single valley, within a few hours’ drive of each other, you will encounter people whose cultures are as different from each other as they are from the rest of the modern world.

The Peoples of the Omo Valley

The Mursi are perhaps the most photographed people in Ethiopia — the women wear large clay lip plates as a traditional symbol of beauty and identity. A Mursi village visit is an extraordinary cultural encounter.

The Hamar, centered around Turmi, are cattle herders whose culture revolves around livestock. The Hamar bull jumping ceremony — a rite of passage for young men — is one of the most dramatic ceremonies in African cultural life.

The Karo, living on the banks of the Omo River, are among the smallest tribes in the valley and are renowned for elaborate body painting using white chalk, charcoal, and ochre.

The Dorze, in the highlands above Arba Minch, are weavers and cultivators known for their extraordinary beehive-shaped bamboo homes — some of the largest traditional structures in Ethiopia.

The Weekly Markets

The Omo Valley’s weekly tribal markets are where different groups come together to trade, socialize, and maintain inter-tribal relationships. The most important for visitors are Thursday at Key Afar (Banna and Hamar) and Tuesday at Turmi (Hamar and Karo). Visiting a market allows genuine, organic encounters with multiple tribal groups in a single morning.

Responsible Tourism

All our Omo Valley tours are conducted with strict respect for community consent and cultural protocols. Photography fees are paid directly to community members. We do not visit communities without prior arrangement and community agreement.
