The New Addis Ababa: Why Ethiopia’s Capital Is Africa’s Most Exciting City Right Now

Something extraordinary has happened in Addis Ababa. The city that international visitors traditionally treated as a transit point — a gateway to Lalibela, Gondar, or the Omo Valley — has become a destination in its own right. And the rest of the world is only beginning to notice.

In the past five years, Addis Ababa has undergone the most dramatic urban transformation of any African capital. Parks where there were slums. Illuminated fountains where there were rubbish-filled riverbeds. A world-class museum built in less than two years. Sixty-kilometer corridor road projects that have reshaped the entire movement of a city of six million people. The social media coverage — especially from Ethiopian diaspora communities who have returned to find a city they barely recognize — has reached tens of millions of people worldwide.

Sheger Park — Africa’s Most Ambitious River Restoration

The Beautifying Sheger project has transformed the banks of the Sheger River — which flows through the heart of Addis Ababa — from an informal settlement and waste disposal area into a continuous green corridor of parks, walking paths, fountains, and public spaces stretching for kilometers through the city.

The most visited section is Friendship Square (opened 2020), featuring an artificial lake, water fountain light shows at night, thousands of species of flowers, and an amphitheater that hosts events year-round. The project won Bloomberg’s C40 Cities “Best Climate Projects” award in 2022 and has been cited internationally as a model for urban river restoration in African cities.

In the evenings, Addis Ababa residents — families, couples, joggers, children — fill the Sheger Park walkways in a spectacle that feels entirely new for a city of this scale. It is one of the most pleasant public spaces in Africa.

Entoto Natural Park — The Forest Above the City

On the northern edge of Addis Ababa, at over 3,000 metres elevation, the Entoto hills were historically a forest of eucalyptus and indigenous trees used for firewood. The Entoto Natural Park project (completed October 2020) transformed this hillside into a world-class nature and recreation park combining forest trails, cultural sites, restaurants, horse riding, zip lines, and the most spectacular views of the Addis Ababa skyline available anywhere in the city.

The park incorporates the historic Entoto Mariam Church — built by Emperor Menelik II in the 1880s when Entoto served as Ethiopia’s capital before Addis Ababa was established — and the museum of Empress Tayitu. Walking the forest trails in the early morning, with Addis Ababa’s towers visible through the eucalyptus canopy and gelada baboons occasionally visible on the rocky outcrops, is an experience that surprises every visitor.

The Adwa Victory Memorial Museum — Africa’s Pride in Stone and Light

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on February 11, 2024, the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum has quickly become one of the most significant new attractions in Africa. Located in Piasa — the historic heart of Addis Ababa — on five hectares of land, the museum commemorates Ethiopia’s 1896 victory at the Battle of Adwa: the decisive moment when Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II defeated the Italian army, becoming the only African nation to successfully repel European colonial conquest.

The museum attracted over 246,000 visitors in its first year of operation. Its architecture is extraordinary — five floors, eleven blocks, entrance through seven named gates (East Heroes Gate, West Heroes Gate, Cavalry Gate, Pan-Africanism Gate, and others), and a rooftop with panoramic views over the entire city. The interior displays artifacts, battle maps, weapons, and artworks documenting both the battle itself and its meaning for Pan-African consciousness worldwide.

For any international visitor to Ethiopia, the Adwa Museum is now an essential stop. It is also, frankly, one of the most visually striking buildings constructed in Africa in the past decade.

Unity Park — Inside the Imperial Palace

Unity Park opened in 2019 within the grounds of the historic Imperial Palace compound — giving the public access to grounds that were restricted during both imperial and Derg-era rule. The park features restored palace buildings, a zoo with endemic Ethiopian wildlife including lions, a botanical garden, a lake with boat rides, restaurants serving traditional Ethiopian cuisine, and a cultural museum documenting Ethiopia’s royal history. It offers an extraordinary combination of history, culture, and greenery in the center of the capital.

The Corridor Development Projects — A City Reshaped

Less visible but equally transformative are Addis Ababa’s corridor development projects. The first phase — 40 kilometers of roads, completed in 2024 — and the second phase of 132 kilometers have reshaped the city’s movement, appearance, and livability. Wide, tree-lined boulevards have replaced chaotic intersections. Pedestrian paths have been created where none existed. The visual transformation of major corridors — from Bole-Lemi to Mexico Square — is remarkable to anyone who knew the city before.
