Day 1: Mekele – Hamed Ela

  • Depart from Mekele early morning in 4×4 vehicles toward the Afar Region. Pass through stunning volcanic landscapes and small Afar villages. Arrive at Hamed Ela, your desert base. In the afternoon, visit the nearby salt flats to see Afar people mining and transporting salt blocks by camel caravans.

Day 2: Hamed Ela – Dallol – Lake Asale – Erta Ale

After breakfast, explore the colorful hydrothermal fields of Dallol, one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth. Discover sulfur springs, acid pools, and salt formations in vivid shades of yellow and green. Continue to Lake Asale’s salt plains for a surreal photo stop. After lunch, drive to Dodom at the base of Erta Ale volcano. Begin your evening trek (approx. 3 hours) to the summit to witness the glowing lava lake at night.
Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale crater rim

Erta Ale – Dodom – Mekele

Descend from the crater after sunrise, taking in the vast views of the Danakil landscape. Return to Dodom for breakfast and a brief rest before driving back to Mekele, arriving in the late afternoon. End of tour.
