2 Days Bahir Dar & Blue Nile Falls
Bahir Dar sits on the southern shore of Lake Tana — Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. Ancient island monasteries shelter treasures of sacred art; the Blue Nile roars over a 45-metre curtain of falling water that the local Amhara call Tis Abay, the smoking water. This is the gateway to Ethiopia’s historic north and one of the country’s most beautiful destinations in its own right.
Day 1: Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar
Fly to Bahir Dar (approx. 1 hour). Check into hotel. Afternoon boat trip on Lake Tana visiting the island monasteries including Ura Kidane Mihret, home to ancient manuscripts and gold crowns. Watch the fishermen cast traditional papyrus tankwa boats on the lake at sunset. Overnight Bahir Dar.
Day 2: Blue Nile Falls and return to Addis Ababa
Early morning drive to Tis Abay the Blue Nile Falls (30 minutes). Walk through local villages to the viewpoint above the falls, where the Blue Nile descends 45 metres. Return to Bahir Dar for afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa.
