3 Days Axum — Cradle of Ethiopian Civilization
Axum was the capital of the Aksumite Empire — one of the four great powers of the ancient world alongside Rome, Persia, and China. Today this UNESCO World Heritage city holds the most extraordinary collection of ancient monuments in sub-Saharan Africa: towering granite obelisks erected 1,700 years ago, royal tombs, the ruins of Queen of Sheba’s palace, and the Church of Saint Mary of Zion — the most sacred site in Ethiopia, believed by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to house the original Ark of the Covenant.
Day 1: Addis Ababa to Axum
Fly to Axum (approx. 2 hours). Transfer to hotel. Afternoon visit to the Northern Stelae Field, the great obelisks of Axum, including the 33-metre Obelisk of Axum returned from Rome in 2008. Visit the Ezana Stone, a trilingual inscription marking Ethiopia’s conversion to Christianity in the 4th century. Overnight Axum.
Day 2: Axum Deep Exploration
Morning visit to the Church of Saint Mary of Zion complex, the most sacred site in Ethiopia, guarded by a single monk who is its permanent keeper. Visit the adjacent museum housing royal crowns, gold crosses, and ancient manuscripts. Afternoon visit to Dungur Palace and the Tombs of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel. Overnight Axum.
Day 3: Axum to Addis Ababa
Morning visit to the local market and optional visit to the Axum Archaeological Museum. Early afternoon transfer to Axum Airport for flight back to Addis Ababa.
